April 6-8, 2019: Three Days in Queenstown
April 9-11, 2019
Alas, our last stop on our trip: Dunedin. We arrived at the Scenic Hotel Dunedin City around noon. We had lunch at Mac’s on Stewart Street where dad watched the final four and mom and I went for a walk. Of course, we had to have some drama in our life. The mastercard didn’t work and dad had to go back a couple hours later to pay in cash…
Exploring Dunedin
The next day, we spent our morning walking to Hard to Find Bookstore to explore what books they had. At noon we did a tour at Speights Brewery. Interesting fact: the three cofounders of the brewery died of liver disease. There is a fresh water spout located next to the entrance that is kept open for the public to use.
When we got out of the tour, it looked like rain was coming our way. We walked to Wall Street Mall, an indoor mall where we could hide from the weather. They had a K-Mart and it felt more like a Target. There were colorful items that were nice and cheap. I’d shop at a New Zealand K-Mart!
Mom’s mission for the trip was to find a piece of art for the house. We finally found something at the train station. Imagine that. We had a food court lunch at Wall Street. Guess what we had…Indian food!
On our last day, the weather was dreary so we decided to have a mini road trip. We drove to Port Chalmers where we walked up to a lookout point at Lady Thorn Dell. We met a couple who had arrived from a cruise and bonded over our love of Trader Joe’s. We drove to Flagstaff Lookout and explored around there. The cliffs were amazing.
Mini Road Trip
Our next stop was Portobello and then the Taiaroa Head – Royal Albatross Center. We explored the museum and took a short walk toward the cliffs. We were feeling inspired to keep exploring so we stopped by the Larnach Castle and Gardens. There was an entrance fee for the gardens and the castle. We opted for just the gardens. We had kumara soup at the cafe and walked around. New Zealand has yet to disappoint us with the views. Today was a day to walk so we got back to Dunedin and stopped at We walked around Dunedin Botanical Garden where we did a couple of loops.
Looking Back
Our last dinner was at Black Dog where we had a nice dinner, reminiscing about the last three weeks in
- Taupo
- New Plymouth
- Nelson
- Hororata
- Mt. Cook
- Queenstown
What a trip this has been. Thankful for the opportunity to have the time and the means to do this trip with my parents. Hoping I’ll be back in the future!
