Cruising Guide to Rockland, Maine

Disclaimer: This is not a comprehensive cruising guide to Rockland, but a summary of our experience and recommendations and what we believe would be interesting to fellow travelers.

Rockland was a quick stop for us on our way back south. We had passed it by car and was told that we needed to stop to explore.

Anchorage and Mooring

Rockland Harbormaster

  • We had heard that there were two balls at Samoset Resort but when we went by, we couldn’t tell the condition of the balls and the depth got shallow fast.
  • Instead, we chose a ball labeled City and tied up. We went to the harbor master dinghy dock and tried to pay, but the system was already down for the season. Instead we got two nights free! The perks of traveling during the “off season.”

Things to Do

  • Rock City Café – I was looking for a place to work remotely from in the afternoon and this was definitely the spot. They had good coffee, yummy food, and a cute bookstore in the back.
  • Sail Power & Steam Museum – This name of this museum is self explanatory. We talked to the staff and did a self guided tour of the space. There was a lot to take in and definitely warrants another visit.

Resources

  • Cruising Club of America – This is the resource that we used to figure out where to anchor or moor along Maine’s coast. This link specifically directs you to the Rockland page.
