This is post #2 related to our move from Baltimore to Miami in 2019. I wrote this soon after and it was so fun looking back on our journey. Enjoy!
May 15, 2019
Despite it being mid-May, we ended up wearing our foul weather gear throughout the night and into the morning. Josh and I had splurged for some Helly Hansen gear with no regrets. Once the sun was up, layers began to peel off. Crazy to think we wouldn’t need all these layers very soon!
We were keeping speed until about 10 a.m. when the winds began to die. After trying to put the gennaker up and failing, we decided to turn on the motor. Even with the slight pause in movement, we still made it to Norfolk in 30 hours. We arrived around 6 p.m. and decided to anchor across from Waterside Marina. Tony’s friends (Chris and Ligia) lived nearby and had graciously offered their shower and to have dinner with us. From the anchorage, we took the dinghy over to Waterside. It turns out we could dock for 4 hours, costing us $9.
I definitely thought we were going out to eat, but Chris and Ligia were way too generous. They had a homemade meal of ribs, salad, and sweet potatoes. To top off the evening, we went to their rooftop deck and sat around the electric fireplace to roast s’mores and drink capprihanas. This would be the first of many generous offerings that cruising had to offer.
Highlights:
- Motor Boat Down
- We had anchored behind a listing motor boat in the anchorage and jokingly said it couldn’t knock into us if it had sunk. Sure enough, it sunk in the middle of the night. We woke up to a police boat circling the only part you could see: the fly bridge.
